– Non-Exempt Primary Responsibilities

The sommelier provides members with world‑class food and beverage experiences through friendly and professional service, consistency of execution in an attractive, well‑maintained environment, and ensuring 100% satisfaction. The staff member maintains active participation in wine and beverage storage, inventory, cost stability, availability, restock and service following the policies and procedures of The Battery. The sommelier engages with guests, maintains polite, respectful discussions without being ostentatious or pedantic, and trains staff to develop and communicate departmental strategies and goals.

Responsibilities also include maintaining tools and equipment, cost and profitability maintenance, and assisting in achieving quality and member satisfaction goals.

Service Responsibilities

  • Perform wine service professionally and timely with appropriate tools. Assist with other beverage orders and service. Participate in fine dining‑level guest experience duties. Wine tasting is limited to educational purposes prior to serving.
  • Maintain a work environment that promotes teamwork, performance feedback, recognition, mutual respect, and coworker satisfaction.
  • Support the F&B team in the development and implementation of a strategic plan and vision for the division consistent with The Battery’s strategic vision.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of all beverages, including liquor brands, beers, non‑alcoholic selections, wine characteristics and descriptions, designated glassware and garnishes, menu items, preparation methods, ingredients, sauces, portion sizes, presentation, and prices.
  • Maintain knowledge of outlet layouts, table/seat/station numbers, proper table set‑ups, room capacity, hours of operation, price range, and dress code.
  • Monitor guest reactions and confer frequently with service staff and management to ensure guest satisfaction. Report immediately any concern or guest issue.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures related to the wine department, including pre and post‑service duties. Assist in wine receiving and storage.
  • Review reservation sheets and seating plans, noting special requests, beverage orders, or VIPs.

Guest Service

  • Ensure wine orders are taken and served in a way that minimizes wait times.
  • Serve wine prior to food arrival, especially for pairings and banquet events.
  • Treat members warmly, recognize preferences, and create a welcoming atmosphere to encourage return visits.
  • Communicate effectively in English (spoken and written). Maintain a professional, neat, and well‑groomed appearance.

Profitability and Cost Control

  • Collaborate with the Wine Director to maintain accurate inventory, wine lists, cellar books, and cellar maps.
  • Eliminate waste by supervising pour levels and monitoring quality.
  • Ensure proper wine or beverage charges appear on checks.

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • A high school education or equivalent.
  • At least a Certified Sommelier accreditation from the Court of Master Sommeliers or equivalent.
  • At least 12 months of fine dining sommelier experience.
  • Ability to perform server, busser, and sommelier duties.
  • Comprehensive English reading, writing, speaking, and understanding skills.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Valid Responsible Beverage Service certification.
  • Professional demeanor in high‑stress situations and guest interactions.
